Alcohol Use Disorder: Brief Intervention and Treatment Referral

Learners will be able to provide brief office interventions, as well as know when and how to refer patients to other types of treatment for alcohol use disorders.

: 1 hr

After completing this activity participants will be able to:

  • Assess a patient's willingness to change and use this assessment to motivate the patient towards treatment.

  • Perform a brief intervention for patients who misuse alcohol.

  • Assess and refer those patients who are at a higher risk level to a specialist's care.

  • Manage patients who have relapsed, encouraging those patients to attempt treatment again.

Professional Practice GapsAt-risk drinkers can be effectively treated solely in primary care by using brief interventions (SAMHSA, 2014). No two patients with alcohol use disorders will respond to treatment in the same manner. References
